Damon Salvatore: Damon was a Ripper, and was turned into a ripper by Dr. Damon was furious with Stefan, as he had made him promise not to say anything to their father for exactly that reason They decided to free Katherine, but were both shot and killed in the process by their own father. This child was killed by Julian in Despite still being in love with her, Alaric knew Caroline truly loved Stefan and told her that he was okay with her being with him.
Their deaths were the final act of a long redemption story. Katherine as Elena breaks up with Damon. She controlled her feelings for him as much as she could do. After it was all over, in the originals they almost ended up together before he died. It was not easy to love someone who ruined some part of your life but still she did, Caroline loved Klaus with all her heart because Caroline had a heart of gold. Rayna had no mercy when it came to vampires, as she was spurred on by a supernaturally induced coma.
She would kill vampires by stabbing them with her sword. However, the soul of the vampire was transferred to the Phoenix Stone, which was what happened to Stefan. After the Stone was destroyed, Stefan's soul entered the body of a recently deceased felon. Stefan almost died in that body, and viewers were on tenterhooks to see if Damon could save him in time. Stefan was such a heroic character in the first few seasons, that when he turned off his emotions halfway through the third season, fans couldn't believe what they were seeing.
Gone was Stefan's romantic and adorable nature, and in its place was a pure psychopath. Stefan made for a genuinely terrifying villain whenever he shut off his humanity, which is probably why it happened so often. He became evil again in Season 6, but that time paired up with Caroline, and then again during the eighth and final season to wreak yet more havoc.
At the end of Season 4, it looked as though the main cast had got everything they had ever wanted. Katherine was no longer a threat, Damon and Elena finally made their relationship official, and Silas was most definitely gone. Silas trapped Stefan in a metal coffin and then threw him into a lake. The youngest Salvatore brother spent months in agony, drowning repeatedly while Damon and Elena lived in blissful ignorance. It has been established already that Stefan was at his worst when his humanity was off, but even for emotionless Stefan, this was completely shocking.
Egged on by Sybil, Stefan went to kill the love of Damon's life, Elena. However, little did Stefan know that Bonnie Bennett and Enzo were with Elena already, placing them in mortal peril.

In the second episode, Damon says that he can clearly see why Stefan is so smitten with Elena Damon needs someone sweet like Elena in his life to heal his broken heart.
