The trunk lid of a coupe is shaped like a rectangle and the top is a few inches deeper. Weight — The fastback has a heavier curb weight over the coupe by approximately 59 pounds. The weight difference of the fastback can be found in the extra material used to create the sloping rear section of the car.

The fastbacks rear window glass is larger, additional sheet metal was added onto the quarter panels, and the folding rear seat had a larger inner structure. Most items remained the same — The differences between a mustang coupe and a fastback give the appearance that they could be completely different cars. However, when you look at the drivetrain, engine combinations and most of the interior they are the same.

You could consider everything in a Ford Mustang from the doors B pillar and forward as the exact same parts. Each model had the same options of engine selection and transmission types. The steering wheel, front dash, and door panels are the same part numbers for both the fastback and coupe.

Starting with the 67 Mustang model the convertible option featured glass panes. If you showed an interest in the Mustang fastback model, you would notice that the roof line now ran to the trunk. A few things were kept the same, but were changed the following year in The GT option was also available on the Ford Mustang 67 models.

However, the upgrades were more cosmetic in nature than in previous year models. With the new Ford S Code option, Ford saw less of a reason to amplify horsepower with additional Shelby upgrades.

The large engine option was the Thunderbird's cid, hp big-block engine. It had cast-iron intake and exhaust manifolds, and a single ccm Holley four-barrel carburetor.

This option always included dual-exhausts. Only cars were equipped with this engine, making it an extremely rare find! Ford did their first significant redesign on 67 Mustangs, so there were naturally quite a few changes to the Shelby Mustangs as well. One of the most recognizable differences from the 66 Mustang version were the scoops.

The front seat backs now featured a latch mechanism to stop them titling forward in an accident, too. Seat upholstery stripes now ran from front to back rather than side to side as on the '67 cars, and the deluxe trim option became wood veneer instead of the earlier car's tasteful brushed aluminium. Under the bonnet, the venerable V8 engine was discontinued mid way through and replaced with a new V8 that had slightly more power.

Since much of the sheet metal is identical between the two years, it's relatively simple to pick and choose which elements you prefer. For example, for a '68 car we'd remove the side markers and reinstate the '67 grille bars out of personal preference.
