There are several reasons of why you should watch the first part or at least read the manga : - Character development: You will start by following the characters since their first days in the academy, and you will start to watch them grow every episode, you will know their life, their personalities, love some, and hate some, you will understand them and how they feel toward each other, and witness every single piece of event that made them arrive to what they are in the Shipudden part.

The first part Naruto is important to watch imo because, well simply because that's when it all begins and the core plot from the first part will be important to know before starting with Shippuuden. Watch Naruto but skipp all the filler. No point in watching those. What u could do is read a summary on Naruto the first one , look up a back story or something of a few characters and then start Naruto Shippuden.

Enough flashbacks to recount all episodes, I think not. Almost all of the flashbacks in Shippuden are of from the same scenes. Naruto has the start of Naruto's ninja career, it is also where he does a lot of his growing, and where you meet a lot of the main good guys and bad guys that will stay throughout Shippuden.
Therefore I advise you to watch Naruto first or else you wouldn't even think that Naruto Shippuden is a good series let alone understand it. If you figure out how much episodes you can watch a day, you can estimate how long it will take you to finish the series so that you can get to Shippuden faster. This is not even debatable and should never be so.
